This week, ASUW (Associated Students of the University of Washington) Senate passed its own piece of legislation to back up HB 1817, the WA Dream Act.

The idea of creating a piece of legislation that’s coming from a student Senate was sparked by myself and several others involved with ASUW, such as La Raza Commission.

The time was right, because the Washington State Dream Act is quickly moving through committee hearings.

A legislative directive’s purpose is to support bills like the Washington State Dream Act from campus; to carry the students voices to Olympia. A huge example was when differential tuition was defeated with the help of a student legislative directive. Now, we have one in favor of the WA State Dream Act, you can only imagine how much change can happen.

The legislative directive passed with overwhelming support in the student senate. A huge success.

The Legislative Directive was drafted with the very diverse members of the ASUW. How diverse? Well, ASUW's Diversity Coalition directors such as the Asian Student Commission, Queer Student Commission and La Raza Commission, as well as student senators from the Students of Color Caucus, and the Office of Government Relations.

It's clear! Students know that the WA State Dream Act is good for Washington. Have you commented yet?  Comment HERE
